University of Maryland's National Socio-Environmental Synthesis Center (SESYNC) integrates natural and social sciences to address environmental challenges through interdisciplinary collaboration and actionable research. When I first started working with SESYNC, they were on an outdated version of Drupal with a sprawling site that had little structural hierarchy and that buried key research and content in hard to find interior pages.
After a content audit, building a category hierarchy, and working closely with a group of 6 stakeholders at SESYNC, I re-architected and redesigned the site. Built on the latest version of Drupal, the new site places research and content SESYNC produces front and center in a faceted search, and acts to underscore relationships between the various researchers and the research they produce.
Tidbit: SESYNC site admin can curate and feature research items though search ‘themes’ in order to surface high traffic categories relevant to their various user groups.
